Painting a Reef Scene

October 16th, 2006

This is a journal of a painting I had previously completed. Enjoy!
I started out with a 30″ x 26″ canvas, primed and sanded. This give me a great texture that will easily allow the paint to set up and smooth out.
I am using a graphite sketch pencil and art gum eraser to create a rough sketch of my subject(s). For the most part, I want to plan where most of the mid-tones and dark shadows will be. The next step is to take a dark pigment and lightly paint the outlines and shadows.

Here I have applied a rough sketch over my graphite drawing on the canvas. I have added some mid-tones and shadows with a dark blue pigment and Liquin medium. This will allow a universal tint in my shading.

This is where I start to freak out… Things are looking sloppy, but with good reason. I just keep telling myself, “The end result will not look like this. I need this layer for shading……”

My wife kinda like it and made a comment that it looks like a Japanese script painting.
