In the Keys Day 1

August 27th, 2007

This year I am diving with a new camera and housing. I sold my Nikonos V and Olympus PT-010 with the Olympus C3020Z for a Canon 710AS with an Ikelite housing. The camera is a 7.3MP camera with great optics and bearable shutter lag. However, if you are using the built in flash, the camera recycle time it increased to nearly five seconds.
The Ikelite housing is a little cumbersome in that the zoom switch doesn’t quite fit perfectly over the camera zoom knob. Other than that, the housing is fantastic. The clear back allows you to see the 0-ring is sealed with is a really big deal in helping you avoid housing floods. Also the shutter lever is very sensitive. The sensitivity of the shutter lever is critical in allowing you to feel the halfway point in the depression of the button allowing you to easily focus the camera.

Here are some pictures taken from our first dive of the trip. We were in very shallow water at 25ft, and the visibility was about 10-12 ft.

We swam upon a lobster trap here in the keys and found it had two undersized and one legal. While it is illegal to tamper with someones trap or contents you can, however photograph them. This one is particularly sad as you can see through the slats the sad look in this Spiny Caribbean lobster’s eyes.
But boy are they tasty!

Here in the Keys there are numerous iguana running around enjoying the spoils of the island life. Offering everything they need to flourish, the Keys is a perfect habitat for large specimens such as this 42″ male.
